Leela Barrock, 49, a Malaysian, joined the Sime Darby Berhad Group in April 2008 as the Head of Group Corporate Social Responsibility. On 21 January 2009, she was appointed the Group Head, Communications & Corporate Affairs.
Ms Barrock oversees the functions of Group Communications, Corporate Affairs and Investor Relations. She provides strategic direction for Sime Darby's global stakeholder engagement and communications initiatives, the Group’s corporate brand positioning and the streamlining of relevant corporate policies and commitments. Ms Barrock is also responsible for providing guidance and ensuring alignment of the Group's engagements with the investment community. She led the Secretariat for the High Carbon Stock Study of the Sustainable Palm Oil Manifesto.
Prior to joining Sime Darby Berhad, Ms. Barrock was a journalist for 14 years, commencing her career with financial daily, Business Times. In 2000, she joined Malaysia’s leading financial and investment weekly, The Edge, covering capital markets and the corporate sector. Her main areas of coverage were the plantation and commodities sector, the auto sector and, media and regulatory developments in the capital markets. Ms Barrock was Associate Editor of The Edge when she left in 2008.
Ms Barrock obtained her LLB (Hons) from the University of London in 1990 and was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 1992. She read in chambers at Skrine & Company but left the legal profession to pursue her career in journalism in 1994.
